| Obverse description | Central square cartouche containing the Shi'ite Kalima in bold Arabic script, reading 'La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad rasul Allah, Ali wali Allah' (There is no god but God, Muhammad is the messenger of God, Ali is the friend of God). The central field is densely inscribed with thuluth-style calligraphy, with additional marginal legends encircling the cartouche in a circular band. The flan is irregular in shape, as is characteristic of early Safavid hammered gold coinage, with the inscription extending close to the rim. |
