| Opis awersu | Central field bears a multi-line Arabic devotional and royal legend in fluid nasta'liq calligraphy, reading 'Husayn, dog at the doorstep of Ali,' affirming the Shah's Shi'a piety and personal humility before Imam Ali. The mint name Mashhad and the regnal formula 'al-Sultan ibn al-Sultan al-Khaqan ibn al-Khaqan, may God perpetuate his reign' appear in the surrounding field and inner border. The AH date 1130 is incorporated within the legend. The entire composition is enclosed by a dotted beaded border, characteristic of late Safavid hammered gold coinage. The irregular flan displays typical hand-struck characteristics of the period. |
