Ahmad Shah Durrani founded the Afghan empire in 1747 after the assassination of Nader Shah, and coinage in his name began almost immediately as a declaration of independent sovereignty over a territory stretching from Khorasan to the Punjab. The ashrafi denomination itself descended from the Mughal tradition, and Ahmad Shah's early issues deliberately echoed that weight standard to ease acceptance in the eastern markets his armies were actively raiding and absorbing.
KM#639 corresponds to his earliest coinage period, before the mint infrastructure of Kandahar had fully stabilized. Planchet quality on these pieces is accordingly variable.
