Hatria was a small Latin colony on the Adriatic coast, and its aes grave series is among the least documented of all central Italian bronze coinages. The "1 As Legend on reverse" designation reflects the relatively unusual practice among minor mints of explicitly marking the denomination — most contemporary aes grave issues relied on type alone to communicate value. At over 420 grams, this piece was cast rather than struck, placing it firmly in the pre-denarius monetary tradition before Rome's currency reforms of the late third century BC consolidated regional coinage.
