Obverse description Central field features the armorial shield of the Archbishopric of Riga, displaying a griffin passant in the upper half and a checker pattern of lozenges in the lower half, all within a pointed gothic shield outline. The shield is surrounded by an inner beaded or toothed border, with the peripheral legend running along the outer rim in uncial Latin characters. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of medieval hammered coinage, with moderate relief and some weakness at the edges. The heraldic devices are rendered in the bold, simplified style characteristic of Baltic ecclesiastical coinage of the early fifteenth century.
Obverse script Latin (uncial)
Obverse lettering IO · HANES · AREPS ·
(Translation: Johannes Archiepiscopus Johannes, Archbishop)
