Madagascar adopted the ariary as its sole legal tender in 2005, replacing the Malagasy franc at a rate of 5 francs to 1 ariary — a redenomination that formalized a unit Malagasy people had already been using colloquially for decades. The franc had been introduced under French colonial rule and retained after independence in 1960; dropping it carried deliberate symbolic weight.
KM#29 bridges the transition, with the dating range beginning just before the official switchover.
