West Germany issued this coin as part of a larger commemorative series tied to the Munich Games — a deliberate exercise in Cold War soft power, projecting the new Federal Republic as a peaceful, democratic host. Ten different designs were released across four years leading up to the event. The series was one of the most ambitious Olympic coin programs any host nation had mounted to that point.
The Games themselves ended in catastrophe on September 5th, when eleven members of the Israeli delegation were killed following the Black September hostage crisis — an event that permanently shadows every artifact produced in anticipation of Munich 1972.
