The "Argenteus-Aureus Magnus" series was a West German novelty issue of the early 1960s, produced as a collector item rather than circulating coinage — hence the X# classification, placing it outside standard monetary catalogues. The Cleopatra subject was commercially popular in 1963 for an obvious reason: Joseph L. Mankiewicz's film starring Elizabeth Taylor had opened that year to extraordinary press coverage, and the West German novelty coin market moved quickly to capitalize on it.
