The Dormition Cathedral at Lykhny sits within one of Abkhazia's most politically charged sites — the village square where, in 1989, tens of thousands gathered to sign a petition demanding separation from the Georgian SSR, a direct precursor to the war that followed in 1992–93. The Bank of Abkhazia has issued coins since the early 2000s as part of a broader effort to assert the trappings of statehood, though Abkhazia remains recognized by only a handful of UN member states.
