Additional information

The Bank of Abkhazia occupies a peculiar position in numismatics — its issues are denominated in apsars, a currency with no international recognition and negligible domestic circulation, given that the Russian ruble functions as Abkhazia's de facto currency. The apsar exists primarily as a vehicle for collector coins commemorating Abkhazian cultural and religious heritage, issued by a central bank of a state recognized by fewer than ten UN members.

The Dormition Cathedral at Dranda dates to the 6th or 7th century, making it one of the oldest surviving Christian structures in the Caucasus region.
