Abkhazia's bimetallic plastic-core coinage occupies a peculiar corner of numismatics — issued by a central bank of a state recognized by only a handful of UN members, these pieces circulate domestically while remaining largely invisible to international markets. The Bank of Abkhazia has produced collector and circulation issues in this format since the early 2000s, operating independently of Georgian monetary authority following the 1992–93 war and subsequent de facto separation.
The plastic centre construction is not experimental novelty — it is a cost-driven solution common to low-denomination issues in small economies with limited mint infrastructure.
