1 Anna - George VI 2nd portrait, small crown, low relief

By 1946, the colonial mint apparatus was already winding down in anticipation of Partition and independence, and production priorities shifted accordingly. This late issue features the second effigy of George VI — a lower-relief rendering adopted to reduce die wear during high-volume runs — alongside a small crown variant that distinguishes it from earlier strikings of the same type. The Calcutta and Bombay mints both contributed to output in these final years, and pieces from each facility circulated well into the early republic before the anna denomination itself was discontinued with decimalization in 1957.
