Additional information

The Angel series was revived by the Isle of Man Treasury in 1984 as a deliberate bid to compete in the bullion coin market alongside the Krugerrand and the newly launched Gold Maple Leaf. Unlike those competitors, the Angel leaned into medieval monetary iconography borrowed directly from the gold angels struck by Edward IV from 1465 onward — a calculated appeal to collectors uncomfortable with purely generic bullion. Raphael Maklouf's portrait, introduced across Commonwealth coinage in 1985, appears here in its uncouped variant, with the truncation not interrupted by the coin's edge — a subtler, more formal composition than the standard issue.
