The Angel series was revived by the Isle of Man in 1984, drawing on the medieval gold Angels struck under Edward IV — coins that were literally pressed against scrofula patients as part of the royal touching ceremony. Pobjoy, operating as the Isle of Man's contracted mint, produced themed variants for major numismatic shows throughout the late 1980s, of which this Hong Kong issue is one. Show-specific strikes typically saw sharply limited distribution, handed directly to attendees and dealers rather than entering any conventional retail channel.
