The Angel series was revived by the Isle of Man in 1984, with Pobjoy Mint handling production under contract — an arrangement that gave the issuer unusual flexibility in design updates and annual variations. The third portrait of Elizabeth II, sculpted by Raphael Maklouf, was introduced across Commonwealth coinage in 1985 and remained the Isle of Man's standard effigy well into the series run covered by this issue.
The Angel deliberately echoed the medieval gold nobles of Edward III and Henry VI, positioning it as a bullion coin with historical resonance rather than a straightforward competitor to the Krugerrand or Maple Leaf.
