The Angel series has been issued by the Isle of Man since 1984, reviving a denomination last struck in England under Henry VII. The "Splash Strike" finish — a proprietary Pobjoy Mint technique producing a frosted, textured field effect — was introduced to the Angel series in the 2020s as a premium collectible variant distinct from standard proof and bullion strikes.
Pobjoy Mint, which held the Isle of Man coinage contract for decades before its acquisition by Tower Mint, developed several such surface treatments as the collectibles market increasingly demanded differentiation beyond grade alone.
