Amanullah Khan introduced the amani as part of a sweeping modernization campaign following the Third Anglo-Afghan War, which had ended in 1919 with the Treaty of Rawalpindi and full Afghan independence from British control over foreign affairs. The new currency system — replacing the rupee-based structure — was a direct assertion of that independence, with denominations named after the king himself.
The .900 fine gold standard adopted mirrors contemporary European practice rather than regional convention, a deliberate alignment with Western monetary norms that reflected Amanullah's broader reformist agenda before his eventual abdication in 1929.
