Frederick Alexander ruled Wied-Neuwied as a small Rhenish county within the Holy Roman Empire, one of dozens of petty lordships that retained the right to strike coin — a privilege jealously guarded as much for prestige as for profit. The Alex d'Or was modeled on the broader family of German gold ducats and "d'or" pieces circulating in the mid-eighteenth century, issued in part to assert comital dignity against neighboring territories of greater size and wealth.
KM#48 is scarce by any measure; Wied-Neuwied's mint output was never substantial, and gold issues from the county are rarely encountered today outside of specialized German state collections.
