Philip the Magnanimous was only six years old when this coin was struck — still three years from the regency crisis that would leave his mother Anna of Mecklenburg fighting off Württemberg's attempted annexation of Hesse. The albus denomination had been a Rhenish workhorse since the late fourteenth century, its name derived from the Latin for white, referring to the high-silver wash applied to early examples of the type.
