Additional information

George II of Hesse-Darmstadt ruled a landgraviate perpetually squeezed between larger powers, and his coinage reflects the financial strain of the post-Westphalian decades — territories devastated by thirty years of troop movements, requisitioning, and plague had not recovered by 1654. The Albus, a small-denomination silver piece rooted in Rhenish monetary tradition, was the workhouse of everyday exchange in the middle Rhine region, its name derived from the Latin albus for white, referencing the coin's silver wash over a base alloy in earlier iterations of the type.

Production ran across a four-year window, and the Schütz reference suggests limited die variation within the series.
