Nassau-Holzappel was one of the smallest and most short-lived of the Nassau partition territories, elevated to a principality only in 1653 under Alexander II. Elisabeth Charlotte, who governed as regent following her husband's death, had authority to strike coinage but the principality's minting rights were perpetually contested by neighboring Nassau lines. The albus denomination itself was a Rhenish small silver unit with roots in the 14th century, by the 1680s already archaic and depreciating against larger trade coins.
The two-year window of this issue likely reflects the brevity of her regency rather than a deliberate series.
