Obverse description Central device features the crowned interlaced cipher 'C' (for Landgrave Charles of Hesse-Cassel) surmounted by an ornate electoral crown with floral embellishments. Two palm or laurel branches flank the monogram on either side, their fronds extending toward the lower field. The date of issue appears in the exergue beneath the central device.

Reverse description The rampant Hessian lion occupies the central field, depicted passant-rampant with its characteristic striped body and curling tail, rendered in the heraldic style typical of late 17th-century German coinage. To the right of the lion the denomination numeral appears in the field. The mint official's initials are present in the lower exergue beneath the lion. A Latin legend encircles the design along the periphery.
