Ganja's position on the Kura River made it one of the most contested cities in the Caucasus — passed between Safavid, Ottoman, and eventually Qajar hands across the eighteenth century. This piece was struck under the nominal suzerainty of Karim Khan Zand, whose authority in the far Caucasian khanates was often more titular than real. The Ganja mint operated with considerable local autonomy, and standard IV issues from this series show measurable die-work variation consistent with provincial engravers working outside direct central oversight.
