| Reverse description | The reverse presents the Shi'ite declaration of faith (Kalima) in three bold horizontal lines of Nasta'liq script occupying the central field, reading 'There is no god but God, Muhammad is the Messenger of God, Ali is the Friend of God.' Surrounding this central profession of faith, arranged in a continuous circular legend within the pellet border, are the names of the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shi'a Islam: Ali, Hasan, Husayn, Ali, Muhammad, Ja'far, Musa, Ali, Muhammad, Ali, Hasan, and Muhammad. The overall composition is densely inscribed, a hallmark of Safavid religious numismatic tradition, with the pellet border framing the design on an irregularly shaped hammered flan. |
