Obverse description Central field bearing a three-line Shi'a kalima inscription in flowing nastaliq script, affirming the Islamic declaration of faith and the authority of Ali as the designated successor. The central legend is enclosed by a circular marginal legend in Arabic script naming the Twelve Imams of Twelver Shi'ism. The entire design is characteristic of Safavid religious numismatic tradition, with script filling the field in an organic, densely lettered composition typical of hammered coinage of this period.
