Obverse description The obverse bears a bold two-panel cartouche design executed in the nastaliq script, a hallmark of Safavid coinage. The upper register contains the Shi'a kalima or royal titles rendered in deeply struck calligraphy, while the lower register carries additional inscriptions identifying the ruler Shah Safi I. The legends are separated by a horizontal line dividing the field into two distinct zones. The flan is irregular in outline, typical of the hammered coinage of the Safavid mint at Baghdad.
