Ashraf Hotaki seized Isfahan after defeating the Safavid Shah Tahmasp II's forces in 1725, ruling a rump Afghan state in Persia for just two years before Nader Qoli — the future Nader Shah — drove him out in 1729. The Abbasi denomination itself was a Safavid invention, and Ashraf's decision to continue striking it was a calculated assertion of legitimate succession over a dynasty he had helped destroy.
Album 2720 encompasses several type distinctions within Ashraf's brief coinage. This "Type C" classification reflects die or formulaic variations documented by Album that help narrow the emission within what is already an exceptionally compressed window of production.
