⅛ Unit

The Ilergetes were among the most politically consequential Iberian peoples of the late third century BC — their chieftain Indibilis allied with Carthage during the Second Punic War, then switched allegiance to Rome, then rebelled again in 205 BC and died fighting Roman legions under Lentulus and Manlius. This coinage falls squarely in the unsettled years immediately after that defeat, when the Ilergetes were being absorbed into the expanding Roman provincial structure while still issuing coins under their own civic identity at Iltirta, modern Lleida.
