| Reverse description | Full-length frontal figure of Saint Rupert of Salzburg, patron saint of the see, seated on a throne in pontifical vestments including a mitre and cope, holding a crozier in his right hand and a book or salt vessel in his left. The saint is depicted with a nimbus, rendered in a mannered late Renaissance style characteristic of Salzburg coinage of the period. The encircling Latin legend SANCTVS RVDBERTVS EPS SALZBVR identifies the figure as Saint Rupert, Bishop of Salzburg, all contained within a beaded border on the square klippe flan. |

Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who became Archbishop of Salzburg at just 28 years old in 1587, used his lengthy reign to transform the city architecturally and politically — commissioning the rebuilding of the cathedral and maintaining close ties with Rome despite frequent conflicts with the Bavarian Wittelsbachs. His rule ended in forced abdication and imprisonment at Hohensalzburg fortress in 1612, where he died five years later. The date range on this issue spans his entire tenure, meaning examples struck near either endpoint carry very different political weight.
