Markus Sittikus von Hohenems secured the archbishopric in 1612 partly through Habsburg influence and family connections — his mother was a Medici — yet his reign is remembered less for politics than for transforming Salzburg into a center of Italian baroque culture. He commissioned Hellbrunn Palace and introduced opera north of the Alps, staging the first opera performed in the German-speaking world in 1617. The coinage of his tenure reflects a prince-bishop more interested in architectural patronage than monetary reform.
