1/8 Thaler - Joachim Frederick of Brandenburg

Joachim Frederick administered Magdeburg as a Lutheran administrator rather than a consecrated archbishop — a legal fiction that allowed the Protestant Hohenzollern dynasty to retain control of the see following the Reformation settlements. The arrangement was perpetually contested by Rome and by Catholic imperial factions, and coinage struck in his name carried implicit political weight well beyond its face value.

MB#81 is among the scarcer denominations of his Magdeburg issues. The 1/8 Thaler fraction saw limited production across most German territories in this period, minted primarily for small commercial transactions at a time when the larger Thaler denominations dominated interregional trade.
