The lion is portrayed in dynamic, naturalistic relief with flowing mane and tail, emblematic of the Hessian dynastic emblem. The circular Latin legend VIGILO PRO PATRIA — meaning 'I watch over the fatherland' — arcs around the upper field, serving as the personal motto of Landgrave Charles. A fine toothed or milled border frames the entire design. The overall composition is rendered in the high Baroque engraving style characteristic of early eighteenth-century German princely coinage. |
