Nuremberg's fractions of the thaler were minted during the opening decade of the Thirty Years' War, when the city's position as a major imperial free city made it both a financial hub and a military target. The Imperial Diet met in Nuremberg repeatedly during this period, and the city's mint was under sustained pressure to produce small-denomination silver to fund garrison costs and municipal obligations as the war moved steadily closer.
The span 1625–1634 coincides almost exactly with the most destructive phase of the conflict in the German territories, ending just before Gustavus Adolphus's intervention reshaped the war's geography entirely.
