| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the crowned heraldic shield of Savoy, bearing the cross of the House of Savoy, surmounted by an ornate ducal crown rendered in relief. The shield is flanked on either side by the initials F and E, standing for Emanuele Filiberto (Philibertus Emanuel), Duke of Savoy. The die work is characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century hammered billon coinage, with a beaded or rope border encircling the design. |
