Pedro IV of Aragon — "El Ceremoniós" — ruled Majorca as a conquered possession after forcibly annexing the independent kingdom in 1343, deposing his cousin Jaume III on the battlefield of Llucmajor. These fractional gold pieces were struck under that occupation administration, part of a coinage system imposed to integrate Majorcan commerce into the Crown of Aragon's monetary framework. The "shoe" designation refers to a cataloger's nickname based on the die shape, not any contemporary term.
