Mexico's early federal copper coinage was a administrative headache from the start. The new republic lacked a unified minting infrastructure, and individual states were granted authority to strike their own copper fractionals — meaning the 1829 octavo exists in varieties from multiple mint cities, each with its own die characteristics and strike quality.
