Mexico's early federal copper coinage was a political headache from the start. The newly independent republic inherited a population deeply suspicious of copper — colonial-era copper tokens had repeatedly been debased or demonetized, leaving ordinary people burned. Acceptance of the federal octavos was accordingly poor, and several states simply refused to circulate them, preferring to issue their own local copper or conduct small transactions in worn silver.
The Mexico City mint produced these under chronic supply and labor constraints throughout the run. Known die varieties exist across the series, with observable inconsistencies in the eagle punch placement.
