Obverse description The obverse displays the Mexican national arms: an eagle passant sinister perched upon a nopal cactus growing from a rocky islet, holding a serpent in its beak and talon. The eagle is rendered in profile facing left, with wings partially spread. The central device is flanked below by a spray of oak leaves on the left and laurel branches on the right, tied together at the base. The encircling legend reads REPUBLICA MEXICANA, punctuated by a large bullet stop.

Reverse description The reverse features the fractional denomination '1/8' prominently in the center of the field, with the mintmark 'Mo' to the left, the assayer initial 'A' below, and the date '1831' arranged beneath the fraction. The entire central device is enclosed within a wreath of palm fronds tied at the base with a decorative bow. A milled border encircles the design, consistent with Federal-era Mexican copper coinage.
