Obverse description A Mexican eagle displayed, wings spread, perched atop a nopal cactus issuing from a rock surrounded by water, with a serpent clutched in its beak. The central device is encircled by the legend ESTADO LIBRE DE GUANAXUATO along the upper periphery, with the date below, and a half-wreath composed of oak and laurel branches adorning the lower field. The design follows the republican Mexican state coinage tradition of the mid-nineteenth century.
