Durango's copper fractionals of the early 1820s were emergency issues, filling a desperate void left by the near-collapse of silver circulation during the final convulsions of the Mexican War of Independence. The new state authority had neither the silver nor the institutional infrastructure to mint proper coinage, so copper served as a stopgap for small transactions that would otherwise have been impossible.
The Octavo — an eighth of a real — was among the smallest units of account in practical daily use. Durango's issues from this transitional window between colonial rule and consolidated Mexican nationhood are notoriously inconsistent in execution, a direct consequence of improvised minting conditions.
