The extraordinarily long date range reflects not a continuous issue but a series of restrikes and prolonged authorized use under successive Castilian administrations long after Ferdinand and Isabella were both dead — Isabella in 1504, Ferdinand in 1516. Granada as a mint city carried particular political weight: the city had fallen to the Catholic Monarchs in 1492, the same year Columbus sailed, and striking coinage there in their joint names was an assertion of reconquest authority that later rulers found useful to maintain.
