The four arms of the cross are elaborately decorated with architectural and floral motifs in the style associated with Nicolas Briot's milled coinage. The circumferential legend, rendered in Latin capital letters, reads: + LVDOVICVS·XIII·D·G·FRAN·ET·NAVA·REX·1618, identifying the king as Louis XIII, by the grace of God King of France and Navarre. The entire design is enclosed within a finely beaded inner border. |

The shield is accosted to the left by the Roman numeral V and to the right by III, together denoting the denomination 1/8 écu. The circumferential legend in Latin capitals reads: ·SIT·NOMEN·DOMINI·BENEDICTVM·, a pious invocation meaning 'Blessed be the name of the Lord.' The design is framed by a beaded inner border consistent with Briot's precise milled technique. The mint mark A, for Paris, appears at the base of the reverse. |
