The denomination is indicated by the split numeral V and III flanking the shield, denoting one-eighth (1/8). The mint mark 'A' for Paris appears in the lower portion of the field. The circular legend is contained between a beaded inner border and a denticulated outer border, consistent with the piedfort's exceptional thickness and weight.
