Obverse description Central shield of France semé of fleurs-de-lis, surmounted by a large royal crown, flanked on either side by the denominational value expressed as 'V' and 'III' (indicating one-eighth), all within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend reads HENRICVS III D G FR POL REX, identifying Henry III by the grace of God as King of France and Poland. The mint mark appears at the base of the design, below the shield. The engraving is characteristic of late sixteenth-century French royal hammered coinage, with bold, deeply struck heraldic motifs.
