| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central device consists of the royal arms of France — a shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis arranged two over one — surmounted by an open royal crown. The denomination indicator 'VIII' appears to the right of the shield and 'V' to the left, together denoting the one-eighth écu fraction. The circular Latin legend, reading '+ LVDOVIC. XIII. D. G. FRAN. ET. NAV. REX', surrounds the central device, identifying Louis XIII as King of France and Navarre by the grace of God. The coin exhibits the refined milled technique introduced under Jean Warin, with a well-defined, slightly irregular flan characteristic of early machine-struck French royal coinage. |
