Additional information

Ferdinand III issued fractional ducats from the St. Veit mint in Carinthia during a period when the mint was already in steep decline — Sankt Veit an der Glan had been the historic coining center of the Duchy of Carinthia for centuries but was increasingly marginalized by Graz and Vienna in the Habsburg administrative consolidation of the early seventeenth century. A 1/8 ducat at 0.45g represents the practical lower limit of workable gold coinage for the period; producing consistent flans at this weight required considerable skill, and St. Veit's output was never large.

Herinek 1096 is among the scarcer fractional gold attributions from this mint's final active decades.
