| Obverse description | Central field depicts the enthroned Madonna and Child (the 'Madonna Enthroned'), a traditional device of the Genoese Republic, rendered in the characteristic crude hammered style of the period. The Virgin is shown facing, seated on a throne, holding the Christ Child before her. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads ET REGE EOS with the date 1641, referencing the biblical invocation 'And rule them.' The coin's small flan results in a compact, somewhat irregular strike typical of fractional gold hammered coinage of seventeenth-century Genoa. |
