| Obverse description | The obverse displays the Portuguese Royal Arms within a crowned shield, rendered in a crude hammered style typical of colonial Portuguese India coinage. The crowned shield features the characteristic quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross) of the Portuguese arms. The surrounding legend reads IOANNES V D G REX PORT ET ALG, identifying the issuer as João V, King of Portugal and the Algarves. The design is contained within a roughly circular flan with irregular edges characteristic of hammered coinage produced at the Diu Mint. |
