The Cessetani occupied the coastal territory around modern Tarragona — Kesse in ancient sources — and began striking their own bronze coinage under the broad tolerances Rome extended to Iberian allied peoples during the second century BC. This fractional issue belongs to a monetary system that never fully harmonized with Roman denominations, reflecting instead older Iberian counting traditions that Roman administrators found convenient to leave alone rather than disrupt.
