The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail to the hair braiding and drapery at the truncation. The date appears in the lower exergue below the bust. Jersey's unusual 1/52 shilling denomination was a direct consequence of the island's pre-decimal currency system, in which the Jersey pound was divided into 26 sous, each worth 2 pence — giving 52 pence to the pound rather than the British 240. The denomination was designed to circulate alongside both French and British coinage already in common use on the island, where no single currency had ever fully dominated trade.
